The Brief

David and Alicia’s garden sat significantly below the level of the house, creating a steep and awkward transition from the rear doors down to the lawn. They wanted to replace this difficult change in level with a generous raised entertaining space that felt connected to the house, while still providing easy access to the rest of the garden. A key part of the brief was to create a series of decked levels that would soften the descent into the garden, incorporate planting areas within the structure, and provide a practical route around the side of the house so visitors could move easily between the front, rear entrance and garden.

Our Approach

We designed a multi-level Yellow Balau hardwood decking scheme that bridges the significant level change between the house and garden. The upper deck sits directly outside the rear doors, creating an extension of the indoor living space, while a secondary deck and wide integrated steps provide a natural transition down to the lawn.

Built-in planters were incorporated within the structure to soften the timber and introduce planting at deck level. The decking was also wrapped around the side of the property to create a clear circulation route, allowing access from the side path directly into the house or down into the garden. Precise picture-frame borders and carefully mitred corners add a refined finish, helping to define each level of the design.

The project was developed through a detailed design-and-build process, with 3D visualisations used to refine the layout, levels and circulation before construction began. The scheme was also designed with future phases in mind, including a proposed pergola that can be added at a later date without altering the completed decking.

I can't say enough good things. Starting from the help on the design to the execution. Ed was able to understand what we really wanted and make it happen. The decking looks incredible. I was almost sorry when they finished because it was like having a couple of friends working in the garden. I will definitely call them again in the future.
