The Brief
Jonathan and Jo’s Edwardian home on Grand Avenue had a rear garden that didn’t reflect the quality of the property. An uneven patio, overgrown borders and a tired lawn left it underused for most of the year. They wanted a refined outdoor space worthy of the house — somewhere to host dinner parties beneath the canopy of their beautiful mature trees, with considered lighting and a sense of quiet elegance.
Our Approach
The existing garden had good bones — two established trees and a south-westerly aspect — so the design worked with these assets rather than against them. A generous natural stone terrace replaced the crumbling patio, providing a level surface for a large dining table directly accessible from the kitchen.
A gravel path meanders through the garden to a secondary seating area beneath the trees, where dappled afternoon light creates a relaxed, almost Mediterranean feel. The path is edged with sandstone setts. We also built a brick and marble BBQ to entertain.
Planting was designed to feel abundant but controlled — a mix of shade-tolerant ferns, hostas and hellebores beneath the trees, with sunnier borders featuring lavender, salvias and ornamental grasses. Uplighting on the trees and subtle path lights extend the garden well into the evening hours.

Ed and his team worked off plans we had drawn up for a complete redesign of our Garden. I would highly recommend Ed, for his depth of experience, work ethic and standard of work, which was all excellent. The project lasted a month and he was always on site on time and worked tirelessly. They built new pathways, laid terracing, built a brick bbq, and even a new side lean to shed. Most importantly we loved the results!!
