The Brief
Abi and Tom had recently moved into a new-build property in Hassocks and were looking to transform their blank rear garden into a space that felt private, welcoming and connected to the house. One of the key challenges was the level of overlooking from neighbouring properties, so creating effective screening without making the garden feel enclosed was an important part of the brief. They wanted a garden that offered places to sit and entertain, incorporated generous planting, and felt far more established than the typical new-build garden they had inherited.
Our Approach
Starting with a completely blank canvas allowed us to shape the garden from the ground up. The layout was designed to create a strong sense of structure, with distinct areas for dining, relaxing and enjoying the garden, all linked by a simple and cohesive material palette.
A series of raised rendered planters introduce height and definition throughout the space, while carefully positioned trees and layered planting help filter views from neighbouring properties and provide a greater sense of privacy. Rather than relying solely on fencing, the screening is achieved through a combination of planting and built elements, creating a garden that feels sheltered and secluded without losing its openness.
The result is a contemporary garden that feels established, private and comfortable to spend time in, successfully transforming an exposed new-build plot into a space with character, structure and year-round interest.
